The Rod Runner from Take Tackle

When I'm fishing for huchen in winter, I wish I didn't have to take my two-handed Huchen rod apart when I change places, but could store it in its entirety in the car. Unfortunately, this is not possible with two-handed rods due to their length, but it would undoubtedly be practical. However, attaching it to the roof of the car when I change places is out of the question, as road salt would have a very detrimental effect on the rod, reel and line, and in real huchen weather, a lot of it is usually used on our roads. In the summer, when the road surface is dry, such magnetic or vacuum holders are quite practical, and I used to use them regularly.

Transport of the Rods Inside the Car

However, it would be much more practical to transport the rods in the car in the full length in summer. Unfortunately, up to now, you have mostly had to rely on your own creativity, because I have not been able to find any really usable rod racks for the car interior. I have tried a few things, but every such purchase quickly ended up in the trash because it was not the desired, practical solution for my car and so I had to make way for my homemade makeshift solution. Now the Latvian company Take Tackle (you already know my preference for their shooting basket) has brought a rod rack for the car interior onto the market that is not exactly cheap, but has passed the practical test without any problems. As with other products for us fly fishermen, the price is secondary if the quality is right. This product is right in terms of both quality and functionality. That is why I am delighted to be able to briefly introduce you to this new product.

The Rod Runner

The rack comes in a practical fabric case and is proper and carefully manufactured. It is quick and easy to assemble. The length can be varied, so the base can be adjusted to any car interior width. The front part of the rack is attached to the windshield. Using an adjusting screw, the angles of the two parts can be quickly adjusted to the respective vehicle, so that the rods can then be placed perfectly horizontally. This means that several rods can be stored next to each other or easily put down. The only important thing is that the tip of the rod is locked into the front part when you sit down and that the desired rod is released again before you get out. Since the rods have to hold well while driving, you obviously cannot pull them out of the holder from behind via the trunk.

High Quality Suction Cups

The base and the holder for the front of the rod are attached to the car window using suction cups made of high-quality silicone.* I was very skeptical about this because other holders, such as those for sat navs before they were permanently installed in the cockpit, would end up back on the dashboard when the temperature changed in the morning because air somehow got under the suction cup. They only lasted longer at constant temperatures in the middle range. I can assure you that this was partly due to my laziness at the time and not dealing with the problem intensively enough, and partly due to the lack of explanation in the instructions. I now know that these holders work and stick for weeks and even in changing temperatures.

The Proper Preparation of the Surface

It is very important that the surfaces underneath are not dry! Dry surfaces allow air to enter when the temperature changes and the material deforms as a result. The same thing happens when you clean the surfaces with alcohol or isopropanol. If you clean them with this, the alcohol evaporates before you attach the suction cup and you end up with the unwanted, dry surface again. Dry and dust-free, as we are used to when gluing surfaces, is poison for attaching suction cups to car windows!

Instead, just wet the window with water before attaching it and the thing will hold rock solid. The water trapped underneath cannot evaporate and thus prevents the material from drying out and deforming. Perfectionists can also use distilled water if they don't want limescale residue when the water is very hard.  So whenever you need to attach suction cups to windows, follow this advice and you will be satisfied, provided the suction cup material is of high quality. The short clip is self-explanatory.
