Fly Fishing Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is situated west of Frazer Island. Frazer Island is the largest sand island in the world and belongs to the UNESCO world heritage. It is the turist destination no 1on the east coast and home to many whales, dugongs, seabirds, sharks but also dingos and many more local species. Hervey Bay is also called the whale capital of the world due to his large migrations of humpback whales. Among fly fishers Hervey Bay became very popular due to the fact that juvenile black marlin migrate along the east coast of Frazer Island every year. On their journey they have to pass underwater obstacles to move further north. Being near these summits at the right time (Dec-February) you can see marlin passing these slots and move onto the flats. Having placed your boat correctly the fish will pass close by which makes it possible to sight cast to them and land your first fly caught marlin. I stress land because the size of the fish (20-50 kg) in combination with the water depth makes the marlin there a well worth and handable target. Unfortunately the marlin numbers dropped dramatically during the last two seasons. El Nino might be one reason but there are also too many boats who are after the fish meanwhile and who chase them around. Marlin do not like that.

However, Hervey Bay has much more to offer than only marlin fishing. Golden Travally can be targetted on the flats and depending on the season huge shoals of longtail and mack tuna as well as queenfish inhabit these waters. The birds will lead you to the tuna and your guide knows how to predict the moves of the fish and how to approach them. Great sight fishing can be expected. The long and powerful runs of the tunas will push you tackle to the limit. If you want to fish Hervey Bay book Johne Haenke, a very experienced fly fishing guide and fly fisher. He is also a fly fishing film producer and camera man who has filmed around the globe with many fly fishing pros during the last 30 years. John also guides for Barramundi and Threadfin Salmon at rivers like the Fitzroy as well as for permit and others around Curtis Island.
